WHO: Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people age successfully, and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson will celebrate “March For Meals” to fight senior hunger at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28.
WHAT: SCI will commemorate the national March for Meals campaign with a brief press conference highlighting the importance of senior nutrition programs and their impact on the community.
This annual celebration marks the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed legislation amending the Older Americans Act of 1965 to establish a national nutrition program for seniors. Now, more than 50 years later, this vital public-private partnership continues to provide millions of older adults with essential meals, wellness checks, and social connection—helping them remain healthier and independent at home.
This year’s event is especially significant, as SCI is on track to deliver its 7 millionth meal later this year—a testament to the organization’s unwavering commitment to combating senior hunger in coastal Georgia.
During the press conference, Mayor Johnson and SCI President Patti Lyons will discuss the critical need for continued funding to support Meals on Wheels and the positive impact of this program on the lives of older adults. Following their remarks, the Mayor will personally deliver meals to a few of the 1,800 older adults who benefit from SCI’s Meals on Wheels program each day.
